woman-rugby-team A multi million rand grant from the South African National Lottery Distribution Trust has enabled the Springbok Woman Rugby team to head to the Women’s Rugby World Cup this weekend. The Bok Women have reportedly spent months practicing and developing their skills ahead of the most important event on the sport’s calendar and hope to go as deep as possible into the competition.

“We have been working very hard in the last few months on our conditioning, technique and our game plan and I am pleased to see the level at which the team is now,” said the coach of the team, Lawrence Sephaka.

“We are also pleased that the players had the opportunity to test themselves against the Nomads and France on the warm-up tour, so I am satisfied with our preparation. It is now time for the players to show us what they are capable of against quality opposition.”

The women have been drawn in a pool with Australia, Wales and France, which is hosting the tournament. The latter were declared Six Nations champions recently.

The National Lottery Distribution Trust transferred R2.3 million to the Springbok Women in the form of a grant to allow them to take part in the competition.

Coach Sephaka said that, ideally, the team is aiming to advance to the playoff stages of the Women’s World Cup

“But we have to be realistic about our expectations as we have been drawn in a tough pool and we do not play as often as many other teams participating in the competition because women’s rugby is still developing steadily in South Africa,” he said.

The coach said that the women believed in their abilities and we had no doubt that they had made significant progress as a team since the 2010 World Cup

“The most important thing for us is to show that in our performances and hopefully see the results in our position at the conclusion of the tournament,” he concluded.
