Tsogo Sun Unveils New R1.6 Billion Suncoast Casino

It has been a long time coming, but the South African casino and hospitality group, Tsogo Sun is finally ready to unveil the fruits of its labor in Durban. The group injected an unprecedented R1.6 billion into the redevelopment of its SunCoast Casino in Durban, thus making this property one of the most exclusive on the city’s Golden Mile beachfront strip.

The chief operating officer of Tsogo Sun Gaming, Glenn Joseph, pointed out that this was the largest amount ever spent by the group on a single property.

“This investment reflects the confidence we have in Durban and will help to position the beachfront as a place to experience the very best in world class entertainment,” he said, as he officially opened Suncoast’s Salon Prive.

Tsogo Sun is just one of several groups investing in Durban’s Golden Mile. In recent years, the area has seen the collaboration between public and private sectors to develop the area. The result has been an incredible rise in employment opportunities and tourism numbers, as well as GDP growth in the region.

Tsogo Sun’s presence on the Golden Mile is significant – spanning 3.3 km from Garden Court South Beach on the southern end of the area and incorporating five hotels. Suncoast was built in 2002 and cost at the time R1.4 billion to construct. However, with 6.5 million visitors passing through its doors each year, it soon became necessary to upgrade and expand the facilities.

The redevelopment project includes an extra 8,000 square meters of space which has been designed to serve casino-goers, theater-goers, movie fans and families.

“The reinvention of one of Durban’s most-loved entertainment destinations brings more than just a plethora of new restaurants, entertainment facilities, a multi-purpose event venue and family entertainment options to the Durban beachfront – it provides an important addition to the city’s offering as a world-class tourist destination,” said Joseph.

“Durban has the Indian Ocean as a natural asset, and Suncoast brings a globally competitive entertainment experience to the city.”
