The Origin of Rummy

The origin of Rummy is debated to this day. Some game historians trace it back to Conquian, a card game that was first described in Mexico in the mid-1800s. Others claim that the game is based on a Mahjongg-variant named “Kun P'ai” or “Khanhoo” that was played in China around the same time. And the name of the game has its own fun origin story: apparently, it’s based on the (now outdated) British slang word “rum” which meant “rather strange” or “weird”.

Understanding Rummy

Rummy is not an individual game but an entire family of games. The basic requirement in each of them is to build melds which can be sets (three or four cards of matching value) or runs (three or more cards of matching suit in an ascending order). The goal of the game is to be the first to go out and to collect more points than the opposing player.

There are more than 30 variants in the Rummy family, from “melding” games like Demosche and Shanghai Rum to “knock” games like Gin and Tunk.

Card Rankings

Rummy is played with standard 52-card French decks (poker cards) with or without Jokers, depending on the game variant. The number of decks in use depends on the number of players:

  • A single deck is enough for two to three players

  • For 4 to 7 players, you need to use two packs

The card rankings are standard:

  • Aces count as 1 unless the game’s rules allow them to be high - in which case, they count as 11.

  • All face cards are worth 10 points

  • The cards between 2 to 10 are worth face value.

Melds

The goal of Rummy games is to build melds that can be of two types:

  • Sets containing cards of matching value - like four 10s or three Qs. Each set has to have at least three cards, and the cards can’t repeat (for example, there can’t be two Queens of Hearts in the same set)

  • Runs contain cards of the same suit in sequence - like 5, 6, and 7 of hearts. Each run has to have at least three cards.

Depending on the rules of the game, Aces may be considered low, and act as the first card in a run - A 2 3 of Spades - or high, and act as the last card in the run - Q K A of Hearts. In some games, they can either be low or high, depending on the decision of the player. They can never be used as both in the same run. Runs in the form of K A 2 of Clubs are never valid.

Jokers

Depending on the game you play, jokers may be used in rummy. Jokers are wild, able to stand in for any other card in both sets and runs. In Canasta, deuces are also used as jokers and are wild, able to form impure sequences.

Variants Offline and Online

Rummy has dozens of variants played in different countries of the world. Each of them has different rules and winning conditions. Some of the most common rummy variants fit into these categories:

Melding

Melding rummy variants include games like 500 Rum, German rummy, Continental, Tong-its, and Penang rummy. Here, different cards and melds are worth a specific number of points. The goal is to form melds and exhaust the player’s card stock in hand before the opponents.

Shedding

Here, the goal is to lay down runs and sets until the cards in the player’s hand are all gone. One of the most popular forms of shedding rummy is Robber’s Rummy where the melds are laid on the table and players can take cards from the melds on the table, even completely reform them, as long as all the resulting melds are valid.

Canasta

Games in the Canasta family use two or more decks and wild cards - jokers and deuces. These games have many rules referring to melds, scoring, and going out. The games are played by two or more players, and they involve partnerships.

Knock Rummy

Knock rummy is perhaps the most popular family. Here, players form melds in their hands and reveal their entire hand at the end of the round. But not before signalling their intention to reveal - often by knocking. This family includes some of the most widely played online rummy variants, Gin Rummy and Indian Rummy.

Online Rummy Variants

Pretty much any rummy variant can be played online in one form or another. Many people play them over the internet even for real money stakes. Online rummy is a combination of entertainment and an opportunity to win some money. But the emphasis is on fun.

  • Indian Rummy or Paplu is the most popular form of online rummy. As you might expect, it’s especially beloved in India, but it has players all over the globe. It is played with 13-card hands, using jokers. The goal is for players to form valid runs and sets, with the condition that at least one of them has to be pure.

  • Gin Rummy is especially popular in the US and Europe. It’s played by two players with 10-card hands. The goal of the game is to form melds in hand and minimize deadwood. The ideal hand has no deadwood - this is called “Gin”.

  • Rummy 500 is similar to Gin Rummy, except that it’s played over a series of hands with the goal for one of the players to reach 500 points.

  • Canasta is usually played by two to four players, in partnerships. The goal of the game is to form melds of seven cards of the same rank (canastas) with or without using wild cards.

  • Kaluki (Kalooki or Kalookie) is mostly played in the Caribbean and parts of Europe. The goal is also to form melds, over several rounds, using wild cards. It has a variant, Kalooki 51, where you have to lay down melds worth 51 points to open.

Strategies and Tips

Rummy is a game that blends strategy, skill, and observation. This is what makes it so much fun to play. But winning is always more fun than losing - so, to help you, here are some strategies and tips to keep in mind.

  1. Observe your opponents. What they pick up and discard can give you clues about their hand, so you can avoid discarding cards they may need. For example, if they pick up a 7 of hearts, avoid discarding the 6 or the 8 of the same suit.

  2. Focus on pure sequences. In many games, a pure sequence is mandatory to declare a win.

  3. Manage high-value cards. Jacks, Queens, Kings, and Aces (in some games) can add a lot of deadwood points to your total. Unless they are a part of a valid meld, discard them as soon as you can.

  4. Don’t rely on jokers excessively. They are important cards, very helpful to complete difficult melds. However, relying on them excessively is a mistake. Use them wisely.

  5. Keep your hand flexible. Hold on to cards that can form multiple combinations. This helps you form melds and win the hand more easily.

  6. Plan ahead. Plan your moves strategically. Consider the consequences of drawing or discarding certain cards.

  7. Stay calm. Rummy is a game of skill - and patience. Stay calm, think through your moves and don’t rush. Knock only when you are confident that you have a winning hand.

Safety and Responsible Play

Whenever you register an account at an online rummy site, no matter if it’s a “for fun” outlet or a real money operator, make sure it is reputable. Online rummy is not regulated in South Africa, and there are currently no local real-money rummy sites available. This leaves you with offshore operators who are not subject to local customer protection regulations and financial laws. Before you register, make sure the site is reputable and has good reviews.

Play Responsibly

Make sure your play experience is fun and healthy. Even if you don’t play for money, dedicating too much time to rummy can become harmful. Make sure you limit your playtime and don’t let it interfere with your everyday activities.

Avoid Scams

Choosing a reputable operator is vital - but so is staying vigilant while there. We live in a world of scams, and the chat room of a rummy site is the perfect place for malicious users to fish for personal information. Be careful what you share to avoid scams.
